Tesco has published further research suggesting local support for its planned branch in London Road.

Last week the Review reported how Harpenden firm Adroit-e Research, challenged over its independence, had denied receiving any payment for controversial market research indicating public support for Tesco.

Now, further polling in St Albans city centre suggests only 18 per cent of local people are opposed, and nearly half are positively in favour.

Tesco corporate affairs manager Michael Kissman said: "These results continue to be very interesting and there certainly seems to have been some movement between the two polls.

"Once again we have a silent majority either in favour of, or neutral about, the proposed development.

"It is encouraging that the number of people in favour has risen substantially."

A planning application for a store on the former Eversheds print works, under consideration by the district council, has sparked vocal opposition from critics who argue it will clog up roads and badly affect trade for other shops.

Adroit-e Research director Jonathan Brill said: "In our view this is a sound and reliable sample capable of good predictive validity.

"The improvement is statistically significant."

Responses such as "I don't care" or "They should just get on with it" were not included in the results, even as neutral responses.

This 'shift' reveals that the survey is in no way representative of public opinion. During the period between the two surveys, Tesco has taken no positive action to promote its store, and in fact is currently infuriating local people even more by wasting more time with its incomplete application. Yet we're expect to believe that a 'significant' number of people have changed their mind! We know that people want something to happen to the Eversheds site, and we know that shoppers might initially be in favour, because they like the Tesco brand, but once they look at the impact on local people and the community, and consider the alternatives, they rapidly become opposed. Our petition of almost 6,000 people is evidence of this.

We'd also like to suggest that Tesco's Michael Kissman stops wasting his time with these desperate surveys and spends some time getting the Tesco application in, so that it can be rejected and we can start doing something better with the land.

I hope I proof read this posting correctly. Michael Kissman I suggest has not reached his position within Tesco’s as head spin doctor without knowing all the tricks in the trade to get project like this proposed in St Albans through. Make everyone wait for the planning application long enough and you are bound to get some people inpatient for the area to be improved, which is playing into Tesco’s hands. These residents will be willing to accept anything as being better than the situation at the moment; again this is what Tesco’s want, although these views were supposedly not included in the results of the market research? Also start spinning the alleged independent market research in Tesco’s favour in the hope it will gain momentum. Surely by now with all the government spin we have had to endure for the last 11 years we can recognise this spin doctor at work!

Is any more proof needed that it is high time this became a moderated forum?
