A REPORT which calls for more competition for supermarkets has been criticised by St Albans MP Anne Main.
The Competition Commission report, released this week, aims to improve supermarket competition in local areas.
Anne said: "We all recognise that people do like to have choice, but the flipside of this report is that it may lead to less diversity in our retail experience. Whilst we may get a wider choice of supermarkets, our small shops and markets would be the victim."
Mrs Main says from this report, it appears that the Competition Commission would welcome the controversial London Road Tesco proposal.
Mrs Main added: "Smaller retailers will now face an uphill struggle as this report firmly sides with the big guys. One of the things that makes St Albans so special is its independent shops and diverse market. Every Tesco looks the same and, in the end, when the diversity of our shopping experience is limited it is the consumer who loses out."
