ROADWORKS which have clogged up the northern part of St Albans may have ended this week, but will return to plague drivers at the end of the month.

Drivers unable to turn right into Batchwood Drive at the Ancient Briton traffic lights have been clogging up the city centre, with further works by the St Peter's Street/Sandridge Road junction exacerbating queues last week.

Reader Jackie Turner told the Review: "The roads near Batchwood are in a ridiculous situation.

"Gridlock ensued near Waverley Road, when at 8am a bus driver got into a heated confrontation with a road maintenance worker on the Batchwood/Redbourn roundabout as he did not have a clue where to divert the bus to."

County council spokeswoman Josie Judge said: "The roadworks are due to the resurfacing of the Batchwood Drive area in St Albans which has been undertaken as one scheme from the Ancient Briton junction to the Waverley Road junction in order to minimise disruption.

"Patching work is also being undertaken on the section from Waverley Road to the Redbourn Road roundabout at the same time.

"The team will return to Batchwood Drive in the week commencing March 31 and complete the outstanding section of works from Green Lane to the Redbourn roundabout, including the Waverley Road junction."

The St Peter's Street work, which is now complete, involved the construction of new gullies to prevent flooding

Dear all,
I have raised various concerns from residents on this scheme. In particular:
1) The roadworks have been put on hold whilst the resurfacing team go off to do a different job- surely this could have been avoided!
2) There have been issues with the rerouted buses which we hope are all resolved.
3) Whether better information could be given "Find Alternative Route" might be fine for local residents, but Batchwood Drive is used by a lot of people who have come to the hospital etc
4) Concerns about drainage, especially at places like the join with Green Lanes and the path there- anyone who walks there will no exactly where I mean!
5) Checking how the edge of the road is already crumbling where it meets with peoples driveways etc.

Having fought for this work I will be doing my best to ensure it's up to scratch!

Regards
Allan

I doubt if Sir Alan Sugar could sort out the expensive joke called Herts Highways. However I think everyone in St Albans would be glued to their TVs to hear what Sir Alan had to say to the managers if he did have a go.

Does anyone remember the name of the officer put in charge of Herts Highways a couple of years ago? I recall he came to a council meeting in St Albans once, but beat a hasty retreat after fifteen minutes never to be seen again.

Welcome back Allan you have been missed!
