THE mouth-watering winner of the St Albans Food and Drink Retailer Award went to butchers A&C Meats last night.

Partners Alan Napier and Carl Hatfull, both from St Albans, scooped the honour at the St Albans Retailer of the Year Awards at the Alban Arena.

The Catherine Street butchers and delicatessen fought off two other short-listed shops in the competition, Hotel Chocolat in the Maltings and Santino's in Hatfield Road to be crowned the favourite.

Carl, 57, who has worked with Alan for 35 years, said: "We know everybody, we understand our market and enjoy being part of the community in St Albans.

"It's great to get this award because it comes from our customers and shows their appreciation. We have really loyal customers who have supported us.

Alan, 49, who opened his shop with Carl 13 years-ago, said: "We're over the moon, we are really surprised to have won, you never expect it.

"Thank you to all out customers, it's been a wonderful night and really pleased to be part of an event like this in St Albans."

Alan Napier was a sound, reliable (i.e. he always turned up, on time) and solid centre half in the St Albans Boys Club team of the mid-seventies, good in the air, not so fast on the ground perhaps. He was a Saturday boy at Dewhurst in Market Place, joined them as an apprentice and stayed until they closed, then he set up his own business in Catherine Street. But for the sandals, muesli and raw veg habits I would be a regular customer.

The award could not have been given to a better bloke. Well done Alan.
