Pothole story makes driver see red
Last week's Review article
Last week's Review article

A FURIOUS motorist has accused Hertfordshire County Council of lying to the Review over previous complaints made about a pothole in Lye Lane.

Last week we revealed that Julie Dunham's car suffered thousands of pounds worth of damage after hitting the four foot long, seven inch deep hole.

The county council told us it would resurface the road during the financial year adding: "We have not had any reports in Lye Lane recently or received any claims as a result of damage to a vehicle."

But after reading our article Simon Bernstein contacted us to say his car had been damaged in the same road.

He said: "I really got annoyed when I read your article, I believe the county council is not being honest."

Mr Bernstein of Slowman's Close, St Albans, added: "They said they had not received any reports about Lye Lane or received any claims of damage to a vehicle - but I made a report when my car was damaged in December last year.

"I had to fork out around £400 for a buckled wheel and a new tyre when I hit a pothole."

Initially his claim was dismissed but when Mr Bernstein contested the decision the county council paid for the costs of the vehicle "as a gesture of good will and with no admission of liability".

Mr Bernstein said: "I am furious they are denying all knowledge about it.

"The road is really dangerous, what if someone came down on a motorbike?

"I fear it would be lethal."

Mrs Dunham, of Pondfield Crescent, St Albans, contacted us last week after hitting the hole.

The care worker said: "It was a shock. When I got home I discovered both my wheels and tyres were ruined."

The county council told us last week it had a dedicated "24-hour hotline and was committed to repairing all reported hazardous potholes".

This week Hertfordshire County Council spokeswoman Jo Brown said: "It appears there has been a misunderstanding.

"Hertfordshire Highways thought that the query regarded whether the lady in question had made any previous claims, not whether there had been claims from other people about Lye Lane.

We apologise for any confusion caused."
