Burnt out car removed
 |
| The charred remains |
A CHARRED shell was all that remained of a car after it was stolen, dumped and set alight by arsonists in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The burnt out Corsa was removed earlier today from behind the old St Albans fire station in Bernards Heath, after joyriders set fire to it.
A Ford KA, also destroyed in the nuisance arson attack , was taken away on yesterday shortly after the incident which sparked a police helicopter hunt and ground search.
Noone was arrested but a police investigation is ongoing.
Firefighters have been called to a number of nuisance fires, including a car fire on Saturday, in the Bernards Heath area over the past couple of weeks and the fire service suspect a gang maybe reponsible.
Watch commander Peter Hatherley said: "There have been three incidents in a week in that area, there must be some form of link but it is hard to say without catching anyone in the act."
Tom Shipp, spokesman for the county council which owns the area of land, said: "We will be reviewing arrangements on the land to see whether we can do stop this happening in the future."
