Tesco pollution fears
A TESCO store in the London Road area will bring worrying levels of traffic pollution, St Albans MP Anne Main has warned.
She said that a report prepared by the store chain itself had confirmed people living near the proposed supermarket would be exposed to pollution.
Mrs Main said: "The does not address the residential houses that will be refurbished and will be directly affected by queuing traffic into the store.
"I am also unhappy about the occupied homes that the report accepts would be significantly affected by dust and pollution during the construction of a store."
The report argues that the store will reduce traffic in other areas by stopping St Albans people driving to London Colney or Hatfield to shop, but Mrs Main described this as speculative.

Yes indeedy and I have a go at you for having a go at me, lighten up a bit, any fool can tell the Review and our lovely MP are posturing over the Tesco plan, one to sell papers (or, rather, advertising) and, admittedly, to fill space, and the other to get votes, albeit Ms Main does appear to have turned a sickly green colour.

Anne Mains not gone green she is just looking out for local residents who will be adversely impacted by a massive Tesco. The 70% increase in traffic will result in long traffic queues and so will cause a significant increase in pollution for all who live near or walk along London Road. Its good to see politicans holding the likes of Tesco to account before they are allowed to trash St Albans. Nitrogen dioxide levels already exceed EU limits in the area and a Tesco will only make matters worse. The Tesco environment report also talks of a whole year of dust impacting anyone living within 200 metres of the site.

And there's probably asbestos in the crummy buildings someone's going to have to remove, whether it's a new housing estate, school or grocery store. So the developer gets the blame for cleaning up the site? I notice no one ever mentions the property company who will get a huge windfall profit from this site, the very people who neglected their buildings and assets for so many years, long before Mr T came on the scene. Dust to dust, ashes to ashes...
