ST ALBANS city centre is in traffic chaos following an accident between a lorry and a car.

The accident at the busy traffic light junction next to the Peahen pub in Hollywell Hill has caused police to stop traffic in all directions.

London Road, Chequer Street, Hollywell Hill and the High Street have all been closed off.

Officers are trying to get the traffic flowing again while police and firefighters deal with the accident.

It is understood the car is wedged between the lorry and the traffic lights nearest the Peahen pub.

The female driver is out of her car and being treated by paramedics.

The driver was male - the car occupants were and older couple. The car was not wedged between the lorry and the traffic lights - the lorry had shunted the car off the road onto the pavement when trying to turn down the road which it could not do as it did not have an adequate turning circle. I witnessed this personally.
