A TRAPPED driver was cut out of his car this morning after it overturned on a country road.

Two fire crews from St Albans were called to Sandridge Road, near Wheathampstead, at around 4.30am and found an overturned blue Renault Clio lying dangerously in the middle of the road by the Wicked Lady pub.

The driver, a young man, was trapped with his legs hanging out of the drivers window and an arm through the sun roof.

But fire crews cut him out of the wreckage within 13 minutes and a waiting ambulance crew took him to hospital. He suffered a large gash to his head.

Firefighter Dwight Williams, who attended the scene, said: "He was well and truly trapped in the car but we were able to get him out quite quickly.

"It looks like he was travelling quite fast and lost control, then mounted the pavement and ended up in the road overturned.

"He was lucky he was wearing his seat belt - that probably saved him."

The first report of the accident claimed four people were in the car and firefighters carried out a search in the nearby bushes with the help of a police helicopter, in case any passengers had been thrown from the car, but the driver was alone.
