Arsonists spark police helicopter hunt

ARSONISTS who torched two stolen cars sparked a police helicopter search in St Albans in the early hours of this morning.

The chopper hovered above Bernards Heath, just off Harpenden Road, shortly after 3am where a stolen Ford KA and a red Corsa had been dumped and set alight.

Police scoured the area of open land behind the old fire station where it is believed the culprits were hiding.

All that was left of the two vehicles when St Albans fire crews arrived were charred remains.

Firefighters have been called to a number of nuisance fires, including a car fire on Saturday, in the Bernards Heath area over the past couple of weeks and the fire service suspect a gang maybe reponsible.

Watch commander Peter Hatherley said: "There have been three incidents in a week in that area, there must be some form of link but it's hard to say without catching anyone in the act."

Shame they moved the fire station to London Road, these car fires could have been damped down with a long hose. Still, a 24 hr supermarket on the site will stop the vandalism and stolen cars set alight.
