A FATHER who successfully battled cancer died inexplainably at home, an inquest heard yesterday.

Ivan Moody, 59, of Glebeland, Hatfield, had undergone chemotherapy to beat tounge disease and even escaped the high risk of getting an infection due to his diabetes before he died.

The heavy smoker had got up in the early morning of January 8 this year to go to the toilet but collapsed and seconds later was found by his wife.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at the scene and again at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital but was pronounced dead there.

Coroner Edward Thomas who lead the inquest today explained that the cause of his death was unascertainable, or Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

Pathologist Rajiv said his heart had suddenly stopped, possibly because of Ivan’s type two diabetes, but the cause was unascertainable.

Coroner Edward Thomas therefore recorded a verdict of natural causes, with the cause of death as Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (an unexplained stopping of the heart), and diabetes.

Rachel Andrews, Ivan’s daughter, said: “He was a wonderful father taken to young. It’s tragic that the cancer had gone and something like diabetes contributed to this.

“More people need to be aware that they need to be tested for diabetes and keep on top of it so this might not happen to anyone else.

”We’d like to thank all the nurses at Mount Vernon Hospital for helping my dad through cancer.”
