Why you should vote Liberal Democrat
3:07pm Wednesday 23rd April 2008
OUR district is special and offers a unique diversity and quality of life. We will maintain that special character and resist inappropriate development in our city, town and villages.
Liberal Democrats will:
- Keep any council tax rises below RPI inflation through efficiencies while maintaining high quality services. The Audit Commission rated our council in 2008 as one of the best performing
districts.
- Fight for our communities: resisting invasion of the Green Belt to meet Government housing and gypsy site totals, demanding the county council mends our roads and campaigning for increased school
and hospital provision.
- Protect the environment: recycling more to achieve our 50 per cent household waste target by 2010, reducing the council's carbon footprint by a quarter in five years and the district's by 60 per
cent by 2025 and implementing green travel projects.
- Require one affordable home for every three built to help particularly key workers and young people remain locally.
- Expand St Albans' cultural facilities and tourism with an appropriate cinema, new Westminster Lodge, exhibition gallery and annual festival.
- Combat street crime by replacing recorded CCTV with live CCTV in our villages/centres.
- Provide more leisure opportunities for our youth and elderly and reduce inequalities in deprivation areas.
