Hatfield hotel wins regional accolade
THE company which runs one of Hatfield's top hotels has been named the best family business in the London region.
Beales Hotels, which has been in the same family since 1769, was given the award in a scheme for family enterprises organised by Coutts Bank.
As well as a four-star hotel in Comet Way, Hatfield, the company currently also owns West Lodge Park in Hadley Wood.
Andrew Beale, the eighth generation of family owners, said: "I am delighted and honoured.
"I pay tribute to the seven previous generations of Beales who have run this great company and to the 200 people who currently work with me to offer fantastic levels of customer care to our guests at both our hotels.
"In these days of globalisation, it is easy to forget that most people still work in family businesses.
"When big names in the financial world are crashing down, we all need reminding that family businesses are conservatively run and are more likely to survive any recession."
Both hotels have won AA rosettes for their food, and the company was recently voted overall winner of the 2008 City of London Sustainable Awards for its environmental achievements.
Jonathan Haggar of the evaluation committee praised the communication between a large number of family, ability to rebrand through heavy investment, and substantial contribution to charitable and community causes.
Beales Hotels will now go on to compete in the national finals in London on June 5.
