Linda Lewis, enterprise operations manager for the cathedral, said: "We started selling our own beer to support the building and the work of the abbey, which attracts thousands of people a year.
"It proved to be very successful and we have sold more than 5,000 bottles.
"Now we are substituting it with a lighter version."
The new version of the beer will continue to be produced from English barley and hops at Saffron Breweries near Bishops Stortford.
Anna Wolfe of Willows Farm Shop near London Colney, the only outlet besides the cathedral itself, said: "The St Albans Ale has proved to be a popular line, and we look forward to offering our visitors this new and improved version."
The new ale carries the same distinctive label showing Saint Alban as depicted in one of the cathedral's stained glass windows.
